The Growing Concern
The incidence of chronic diseases and ill health is on the rise globally, affecting all age groups. One
significant contributing factor is the increasing concentration of toxic compounds in our
environment. It is estimated that over 60,000 different chemicals are now in use, with 6.5 billion
pounds released into the air each year in the US alone. Excessive exposure to these environmental
toxins can cause metabolic damages and disrupt body functions, correlating strongly with disease
burden.
These chemicals damage our eggs and sperm, as well as disrupt all major bodily systems showing up
as fatigue, brain fog, acne, weight gain, fluid retention, autoimmune diseases, thyroid disease,
headaches, migraines, hormonal imbalances and many more.
Key Environmental Toxins
1. Toxic Heavy Metals Toxic heavy metals such as lead, mercury, cadmium, and arsenic are
major environmental pollutants. They increase free radical production and oxidative stress,
poison enzymes, cause direct DNA damage, disrupt the endocrine system, and damage cell
walls and mitochondria.
2. Persistent Organic Pollutants (POPs) POPs include pesticides, herbicides, and industrial
chemicals. They bioaccumulate in human and animal tissues, magnify in food chains, and
cause liver and other organ damage. They interfere with blood sugar regulation, cause DNA
and mitochondrial damage, promote inflammation, and disrupt methylation pathways.
3. Bisphenol A (BPA) and Phthalates BPA, used in plastics and epoxy resins, and phthalates,
used to make plastics flexible, are ubiquitous in the environment. BPA is an endocrine
disruptor, affecting the reproductive, immune, neuroendocrine, hepatic, and renal systems.
Phthalates are associated with infertility, low testosterone, allergies, autism, mood
disorders, reduced cognition, diabetes, and obesity.
4. Organic Solvents and Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs) These include substances like
toluene, benzene, styrene, and xylene, which are rapidly absorbed and distributed in the
blood and fatty tissues. They are associated with neurological, respiratory, and reproductive
disorders, and damage liver function.
Supporting Detoxification
Detoxifying from environmental toxins is a continual process and varies based on individual health.
Key strategies include:
Liver Support: The liver is the primary organ for detoxifying lipophilic chemicals.
Gastrointestinal (GI) System: Increasing the excretion of fat via stools can effectively eliminate toxic load.
Kidneys: Aid in toxin elimination through urinary excretion.
Antioxidant Support: Important as environmental toxins increase pro-oxidant load, escalating oxidative damage.

Reducing Chemical Exposure
Dietary Changes
Consume:
Fresh, organic fruits and vegetables
Whole grains, nuts, seeds, and lean meats
High sulphur content foods like garlic, eggs, onions, and legumes
Cruciferous vegetables like broccoli, cabbage, and Brussels sprouts
Antioxidant-rich foods like blueberries, goji berries, raspberries, blackberries and spinach
Water-soluble fibres like pears, apples, oat bran (omit if GF) and legumes
Avoid:
Alcohol, coffee, soft drinks, and packaged juice
Saturated fats, refined sugars, and salt
Barbecued, grilled, and charbroiled foods
Processed foods and gluten-, dairy-, and soy-containing products
Farmed fish
Supplements and Herbs
Broccoli Seed Extract: Supports liver detoxification pathways.
Chlorella: A source of chlorophyll and other nutrients, supports body detoxification.
Green Tea: Rich in antioxidants, improves total antioxidant capacity.
Milk Thistle: Supports liver function and helps relieve digestive disturbances.
Spirulina: Supports immune system function and protects against environmental toxins.
Quercetin: Reduces oxidative stress and inflammation, protects against environmental toxins.
Vitamins A, B6, B9 (folate), and B12: Support immune function and detoxification processes.
Practical Detox Routine
Morning Routine:
Check your blood sugar and record it. Aim for 5 nmol/L and under.
Start with a few minutes of yoga or meditation or deep belly breathing
Dry brush before showering and scrape your tongue before brushing teeth.
Complete a simple lymph massage. This is an easy one to follow https://www.tiktok.com/@anastasiabeautyfascia/video/7242412616772111659
Drink a warm glass of water to kickstart digestion, followed by a 300mls of an electrolyte mix to hydrate your cells
Make a nutrient-rich shake to start your day. I love Bush Tucker Vegan Protein Powder, Wild Blueberries, Organic Strawberries, ½ tsp spirulina, ½ tsp chlorella, organic coconut water, 1tbs hemp seeds, 1 tbs tahini – blend with ice
Midday Lunch
Enjoy a detox-friendly lunch such as grilled snapper or flathead with steamed broccoli and sautéed carrots.
Evening Routine:
Have a detox-friendly dinner like 1 cup cooked quinoa over 1-2 cups of shredded white cabbage with a hard-boiled egg, tomato, and sunflower seeds. Dressed up 1 tsp oregano, 1-2 tbs organic extra virgin olive oil, 1 tbs red wine vinegar, ½ tsp salt
Turn off electronics an hour before bed.
Ensure a good night’s sleep.
Supporting your body’s natural detoxification processes is crucial for maintaining optimal health and reducing the impact of environmental toxins.
Much Love,
Megan
